Stop Scams and Save Children

In the face of the orphanage scam crisis in Africa, we are committed to empowering positive change at multiple levels. Our efforts extend to protecting children, reuniting families, supporting legitimate orphanages, and assisting donors in making informed choices. Orphanage scams represent a distressing issue, particularly prevalent in certain regions of Africa. These scams prey on the vulnerability of impoverished families who are struggling to provide for their children. Parents, faced with the heart-wrenching choice of seeking a better future for their offspring, often find themselves deceived by deceptive individuals promising education, ample food, and foreign donor connections through placement in so-called orphanages.

How The Scam Works

It all starts with families struggling in poverty, yearning for a glimmer of hope for their children’s future. They believe that placing their beloved children in an orphanage will provide them with a chance at better education and more food, a lifeline to break free from their ongoing struggle. However, the grim reality is a heart-wrenching deception.

These well-intentioned families, facing a painful decision, encounter individuals from their own country who dangle the promise of foreign donor connections through orphanage placement. The dilemma deepens as parents wrestle with their yearning to keep their children close and the promise of a brighter future.

Once the children are entrusted to these so-called orphanages, the tragedy intensifies. Contrary to the promises made, the children find themselves fed worse than they were at home, denied an education, and subjected to general neglect. Their sole purpose within these institutions becomes a painful realization – to serve as tools to raise funds for the unscrupulous orphanage owners. Adding to the tragedy, these children are robbed of the means to contact their parents, while their parents, already in dire straits, lack the resources to trace their lost loved ones.

The Donor Delima

The heart-wrenching reality of orphanage scams doesn’t just affect the children and their families; it extends to well-intentioned donors who believe they are making a positive impact. These donors, motivated by a desire to help vulnerable children, contribute their resources to what they believe are legitimate orphanages

Donors often receive photos of the children and official-looking receipts, which seem to validate their contributions. However, over time, doubts may begin to creep in. Inconsistencies, a lack of tangible impact, or growing suspicions about the orphanage’s legitimacy can erode donors’ confidence. This uncertainty leaves donors in a distressing dilemma, as they often feel powerless to investigate or take action to address their concerns.
